antique & vintage holiday ornaments

I LOVE thrifting, you never know what little gems you'll find-it's like an open ended treasure hunt. Found these yesterday and plan to go back once the antique store has a sale to snap up some truly amazing pieces. I love the vintage ornaments in pinks and blues!

So exciting to see Buro Tree from Buro North Australia, offers two new tree types in addition to their original. I am loving the geometric looking one!

If you want one a little bit different, Raow from New Zealand (below) makes some fantastic flat pack alternative xmas trees! Their plywood trees come in two sizes: (600mm) is NZ$60 and the medium (1200mm) is $160.

open studios: holiday market 2009

This year marks the first annual Open Studios Holiday Market, located at Nau in the 29th Street Mall, Boulder. The show was organized by the amazing creative talent Kristin Fitzgerrell of Studio 22. This juried collection of amazing Boulder creatives includes: artists, seamsters, photographers, jewelers, printers and crafts people.
Some of my personal highlights for the show were: Denise Love of Dandy Social Club, True June jewelry, The Bozeman's from Bird Dog Press papers, Milner CarolAnn Wachter & Childrens clothing from Feral Apparel by Stacey Moore, who does not have a website yet, but her collection can been viewed at her husbands Architectural Design company: Tres Birds Studio.
Check it out! Today is the last day.
If you are aware of talented crafters in the Front Range area that were not represented in this show, leave a comment about how they can be found, and I will pass the information along for the next show! It would be great to create an Indy Crafters coalition for Boulder and the Front Range area--help make that happen by making yourself or your crafter/art friends visible!!!

gingerbread: red square
Some Swedish friends, Johannes and Paloma compete every year for the best gingerbread architecture. This year their lovely creation was Red Square in Moscow. I love that they made it interactive and the crowd decorated with tons of tiny candies. See their creation from last year, Chitchen Itza here. Creative Room also hosted a competition this year, pitting 10 architects and designers as a "candy-filled homage to The Case Study House Program organized by Arts and Architecture Magazine from 1945 to 1964.

fancy tiger's annual holiday handmade crafts 2009

Last weekend, I snuck down to Denver to enjoy Fancy Tiger's annual local Holiday Handmade craft bash. With such an amazing slew of talented makers, it was a real treat! Several topped the list, they are:
Mukee Design, they take recycled skateboard decks, turning them into jewelry and totally hip belt buckles.
The Kansas City Kitty girls were totally amazing, Christie is the artist who makes the adorable faux fur Friendly Monsters.
Lindsay at Earthlings Pet Care had a great selection of handmade pet toys and accessories.
Rachel of Affinitas Apothecary (affinitasapothecary@gmail.com) blends luxurious salves, tub teas and other herbal delights-her training includes Western as well as Ayurvedic medicine. One item that made me more curious was tumeric infused honey. Whoa.
Knitty Knitty Bang Bang is a cute company making knit scarfs for dogs and kitties.
All Good Wishes is Heide Murray's company, luckily I have taken one of her felting classes-she is so gracious to share her super talent. She is a pro needle felter, offering kits for making some of her designs.
& Kiwi & Company knits superb handbags
This year Holiday Handmade was was held in the beautiful
South Broadway Christian Church with gorgeous floral stained glass windows, soon to be refurbished pipe organ and wonderfully hospitable Pastor Mark.
Lest I forget, one of the highlights was sweet treats by Sugar Bakeshop If you missed it this year--don't miss it next!

haute gingerbread ideas: moomin house
There is nothing more quintessentially holiday than gingerbread. Nothing more quintessentially Swedish/Finnish than Moomin, so this year I will give this Moomin lighthouse a go. For those of you unfamiliar with Moomin, they are hippo-like troll creatures from a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson (born part of the Swedish speaking minority in Finland). originally published in Swedish by Schildts in Finland. The family of trolls are white and roundish, a carefree and adventurous family who live in their house in Moominvalley, in the forests of Finland. Moomin residences include a lighthouse and a theatre.
Gingerbread has an interesting history as well, originally brought to Europe by the Crusaders. There are written Swedish references showing nuns were baking gingerbread to ease digestion in the year 1444. The first documented trade of ginger bread cookies is dated to 1500's where they were sold in monastery pharmacies and town square farmers markets. Gingerbread became widely available in the 1700s. Originally, the term gingerbread referred to preserved ginger, then to a confection made with honey and spices.

strode college: cardboard catwalk: recycled costumes
I wish I had found these magnificent costumes before Halloween, but...ce la vie. Students from Strode College's Creative and Art & Design department created costume and fashion by recycling cardboard packaging. The project was celebrated in a catwalk show where students could model their creations. The cardboard creations included an Octopus, Shark, Warrior and ornate evening gowns.
